This project was built for a rare homeowner that preferred wood for virtually the entire project. The project included a 600 sqft. ipe deck, cedar railing, and a pavilion constructed with cedar columns and a pine ceiling. (The ipe had not been sealed when the photos were taken.)

The close-up of the decking demonstrates why we prefer to face-screw hardwood decking as opposed to grooved boards. Face-screwing helps to keep the deck surface level and flat for the long term. Clips can, over time, loosen and lead to unevenness in the deck surface.

This project is a simple 14x16 deck, built with cedar decking and railing, as well as a built-in bench on each corner.
The design is very simple--a basic rectangular shape with 45 clipped corners. The size (14x16) is suitable for basic outdoor activities, such as seating and dining.

Benches around this low maintenance deck gives a non-obstructive view of the back yard in addition to additional seating.

A deck doesn't need to have multiple levels to have separate rooms. The dividing deckboard and bumpout effectively creates two separate areas, including a separate dining area.
